Department Of Psychiatry

Chairman: Professor Papadimitriou Georgios

Eginition Hospital

The Department of Psychiatry of Athens University is housed in Eginition Hospital, which was founded in 1904 with the initiative of the first professor of Psychiatry in Greece Michael Katsaras, student of J. M. Charcot, and was funded by a contribution of Dionisios and Helen Eginitou (royal decree 19/7/1904). Since its foundation, it housed the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry of the University of Athens. Today, after the separation of the two in 1963, it continues to house both  Departments.

The Department of Psychiatry was always a pioneer in the introduction of new methods of psychiatric treatment in Greece. Along with inpatients' wards, outpatient care units as well as services covering almost all fields of Mental Health Care were developed, which extended far beyond the boundaries of Eginition Hospital. Psychotherapy sections, laboratory units as well as laboratories for pure scientific research were also developed. Education is one of the most important activities of the Department of Psychiatry, extending through the whole spectrum of Mental Health experts, offering a modern and complete program of theoretical and practical training, whether in undergraduate, postgraduate, or continuing education level.
